Circus Life

In the spring of 1979, by chance, I came across a travelling circus set up at Napierville, a small town on the outskirts of Montréal. I wandered around behind the tent and observed the circus performers getting ready for their performance. I was hooked. Throughout that summer I followed this circus, the Québec owned and run Cirque Gatini, to different towns in Québec and Newfoundland. In February 1980, I took the road to Florida, where the circus performers have their winter quarters, then crossed over to Mexico. For three to four months, I observed and shared the lives of circus performers, struck by their quiet strength and how the mastery of their art has become a way of life.
