Tibetans in exile

The first Tibetans to escape from the rampage of the People’s Liberation Army was in 1959. There are now over 150,000 Tibetans in exile, the vast majority in India and Nepal where they have set up institutions and a way of life to maintain their culture and religion. I photographed these communities in 1987 and in 1989.
